About Russell Kightley
Published in Nature, Scientific American, Playboy, New Scientist, BBC, NASA and more.
I started working as a scientific illustrator in 1981. I studied graphic design in the late 70s. Then I worked in traditional hospital-based medical illustration, using pen and ink and watercolour. Then came a long stint in university-based medical video production (including two years at Stanford University in the early '80s). My first award was a CINE Golden Eagle in 1984. Dozens of film and video awards followed. In 1997 I received a Graduate Diploma in Electronic Arts from the Australian National University. Now I am in private practice as a scientific illustrator and fine artist and science fiction writer. You can buy my SF-themed art and book cover prints here .
My painting Qualia's Jungle won the E. G. Harvey Award for Australian SF Art in 2016.
My Animal Cell image features full page in Richard Dawkins' bestseller "The Greatest Show on Earth". In April 2021, the Animal Cell went viral, attracting interest from all over the world, particularly in France.
Bright, detailed, vibrant, and highly researched, they are perfect for biotech companies, medical offices, museums, and homes. Also available as digital downloads (RM & RR licences) at www.scientific.pictures .
