About Russell Kightley
I started working as a scientific illustrator in 1981. I studied graphic design in the late 70s. Then I worked in traditional hospital based medical illustration, using pen and ink and water colour. Then came a long stint in university based medical video production (including two years at Stanford University in the early 80's). My first award was a CINE Golden Eagle in 1984. Dozens of film and video awards followed. In 1997 I received a Graduate Diploma in Electronic Arts from the Australian National University. Now I am in private practice as a scientific illustrator and fine artist and science fiction writer.
My painting Qualia's Jungle won the E. G. Harvey Award for Australian SF Art in 2016.
My Animal Cell image features full page in Richard Dawkins' best seller "The Greatest Show on Earth".
My images appear in museums, schools, and offices around the world. They feature in science magazines and textbooks. Bright, detailed, vibrant, and highly researched, they are perfect for biotech companies, medical offices, museums, and homes. Also available as digital downloads (RM & RR licences) at www.scientific.pictures .
