Image of an influenza virus particle, the cause of flu. These viruses are covered by spikes of Haemagglutinin (red projections) and Neuraminidase (the squarish yellow projections), hence the H and N names, such as H5N1. These spikes pass through the greenish viral envelope to dock with the underlying matrix (M) proteins shown in grey. Flu viruses have a segmented genome which can get jumbled up during replication (gene mixing). This allows different strains to easily form from existing types. Flu occurs in seasonal epidemics and periodically as major pandemics.
Influenza viruses have two kinds of spike, Haemagglutinin (HA, in red) and Neuraminidase (NA, in yellow). Different types of HA and NA are designated by numbers (e.g. H5N1). HA helps attach the virus to the host cell and NA is involved in releasing the virus from the cell. The viral envelope (bluish) is derived from the host cell plasma membrane when the virus buds from the cell. RNP (ribonucleoprotein, in yellow) cons...
Scientific artwork for large modern interiors such as a designer home, corporate office, biotech company, science museum, school, research laboratory, university, hospital, clinic, dental surgery or doctor's office. I am an artist based in Canberra, the capital city of Australia. I started working as a science illustrator in 1981. I studied graphic design in the late 70s. Then I worked in traditional hospital based medical illustration. Pen and ink and water colour. Then came a long stint in university based medical video production (including two years at Stanford University in the early 80's). My first award was a CINE Golden Eagle in 1984. Dozens of film and video awards followed. In 1997 I received a Graduate Diploma in Electronic...
