Very nice! When I was a kid, I'd go and get some creek water to watch all the little critters under my microscope, and the Paramecium was always fun to watch! Looks like the real deal to me!! Thanks for sharing!!

Artist's Description

Paramaecium (paramecium), a ciliated unicellular organism popular in biology classes. It has a firm outer pellicle and a slight twist. It is coated in cilia (little hair like projections) that drive food into its mouth and propel the animal along. The picture includes four images of Paramecium from different viewpoints. Paramecium has a rather complex shape with a slight helical twist and a ventral "mouth". It is a single cell and is covered in a firm pellicle from which many cilia project. The cilia act like tiny oars and propel the paramecium along and drive food into its "mouth". The food (mainly bacteria) progresses along the gullet (bluish, slightly "S" shaped feature) where it collects at the end in a newly forming food vacuole. This eventually buds off from the gullet. Food vacuoles circulate around the interior of the paramecium and finally dock with a fixed hole and the rear ventral surface where the undigested material is ejected. Paramecium has characteristic stellate contra...

Russell Kightley

Scientific artwork for large modern interiors such as a designer home, corporate office, biotech company, science museum, school, research laboratory, university, hospital, clinic, dental surgery or doctor's office. I am an artist based in Canberra, the capital city of Australia. I started working as a science illustrator in 1981. I studied graphic design in the late 70s. Then I worked in traditional hospital based medical illustration. Pen and ink and water colour. Then came a long stint in university based medical video production (including two years at Stanford University in the early 80's). My first award was a CINE Golden Eagle in 1984. Dozens of film and video awards followed. In 1997 I received a Graduate Diploma in Electronic...
